Alsace road trip: Riquewihr, Colmar, Kaysersberg and Eguisheim

I am passionate about Medieval History - Gothic cathedrals, medieval castles, old buildings and cobbleston streets are Europe's most important heritage! I started searching on Google Maps for destinations dating from the Middle Ages, where we were going to stop for just a few days during our road trip by car from UK to Italy. That's how I came to choose the Alsace region. An unexpectedly beautiful region, about which I must admit I didn't know too much, except that throughout history  was a component part of France and Germany.
We chose a very cute hotel in the medieval town of Riquewhir, located in the center of the Alsace and was a perfect place to stay and visit the region. The city is part of the Alsacian Wine Route, launched in 1953 and is one of the oldest wine routes in France. It is 170 km north-south, passing through 70 wine-growing villages, renowned for being some of the "most beautiful villages in the Alsace". We have been able to visit only a few of them: Riquewhir, Colmar, Kaysersberg, Eguisheim and Strasbourg, which I will post in the following article.

Noi am reusit sa vizitam doar citeva dintre ele: Riquewhir, Colmar,  Kaysersberg, Eguisheim si Strasbourg despre care voi povesti in urmatoarele articole.

Colmar, Capital of Alsace wines

The next town that we visited after Riquewihr was Colmar, Capital of Alsace wine. The city center, which has miraculously survived the vagaries of history, is a veritable mosaic of half - timbered houses, multi colored facades, statues, finely crafted shop signs, impressive churches, canals and fountains. An interesting fact about Colmar it is that the creator of the famous New York  Statue of Liberty -  Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was born here and is also a Museum dedicated to him.

Day trip to Dover Castle and Canterbury

After a very busy week, we took a mini trip into the country of Kent - known traditionally as " The Garden of England " and w e  choose two of the most visited sights in the region:  Dover  Castle and Canterbury city.          Dover Castle is one of the largest castles in the country that was strategically placed at the shortest crossing point to continental Europe. The castle is divided into several compartments, chronologically presented. We needed almost all day to visit the interior! The first section includes the Roman Lighthouse and St Mai Castro Church and is the oldest building of the castle. Then follow the medieval castle, which presents the daily life of the medieval age, the defense tunnels and the Great Tower. The last section is devoted to the...

Stonehenge and Old Harry Rocks

Because I'm passionate about history, one of the places we chose to visit in UK was Stonehenge, perhaps the world’s most famous prehistoric monument, built about 5,000 years ago and regarded as a British cultural icon.        Less than an hour's drive from Stonehenge begins Jurassic Coast, a 150-kilometer portion of the British coast, where Old Harry Rocks is one of the most spectacular points of it, there you can enjoy a series of massive calcareous rocks surrounded by a superb landscape.
